Miriam Voortman brings over 16 years of specialised clinical experience in voice, swallowing, and upper airway disorders, with a unique foundation in both the performing arts and allied health. Originally trained as a professional vocalist, Miriam holds a Bachelor of Music Performance in Jazz Voice from the Elder Conservatorium (2003). Her transition into speech pathology was fuelled by a firsthand understanding of the clinical gaps faced by professional voice users. She went on to complete a Master of Speech Pathology at Flinders University in 2006.
Miriam has since held senior clinical appointments in both public and private settings across Adelaide and Melbourne, including tertiary hospitals, ENT specialist clinics, and multidisciplinary practices. Her deep working knowledge of laryngeal anatomy, vocal function, and swallowing physiology has allowed her to develop and deliver advanced care models for patients with highly complex needs, often in close collaboration with ENT, respiratory, and ICU teams.
Clinicians know Miriam for her evidence-based, function-driven approach and her ability to bridge the often complex divide between medical, behavioural, and performance-based voice care. She has not only contributed to the development of novel airway clinics in Australia but is also a sought-after educator and mentor for students and emerging clinicians in the voice and swallowing space.
